The Tarkine

March 26, 2008

I was watching a show on the Tarkine Forrest in Tasmania last night. Amazing place, one of the most untouched ecosystems on the world. I instantly yearned to take my wife and children to Tasmania and walk among the giant trees and pass waterfalls and eat fresh crayfish straight out of crystal clear water.

This morning God put something on my heart. ALL of that can disappear. It can all be destroyed and God will not bat an eyelid. The most beautiful scenery, the most majestic animal, it can all be destroyed totally and He won’t care.

BUT one winging, whining complaining, ignorant, selfish human being doesn’t turn back to Him and he would be devastated. If my daughter killed someone, I would forgive her without question, no matter what her motives. She is my daughter, I love her, it is just the way it is…there is nothing she could do to make me love her less. If she was sick, I would die for her, its just the way it is.

I would not die for the most majestic animal or the most beautiful piece of scenery and no, I probably wouldn’t die for a winging, whining complaining, ignorant, selfish human that I didn’t love. But I give conditional love, God does not. He doesn’t care about pollution and destruction of the forests EXCEPT that it illustrates that we have not yet all turned back to HIM. If we had, we wouldn’t live the consumerist way we do BUT saving the forests without being saved yourself is pointless. If you want to do something for God, plant a seed. In someone’s heart.

God Bless You

Doing Good Deeds

March 24, 2008

One thing I am conscious of is that theologians often believe strongly that you shouldn’t use bible verses out of context. I tend to do that a bit and I apologize if I make mistakes, please send me an e-mail if you have advice or suggestions or corrections for me.

I want to talk about doing good deeds. The verse God has given me for this is Genesis 12:2. At least that is the verse I thought I wanted. Unfortunately He gave it to me in Indonesian, in the form of Ang Pao and it wasn’t even the full verse. It was a sticker that just said Kejadian 12:2 “Aku akan memberkati engkau dan kamu akan menjadi berkat” or “I will bless you and you will be a blessing”

I stuck the sticker on my car and I have received a lot of revelation and insight by meditating on what it says. It was only when I sat down to write this that I checked the full verse. I re-read the full verse in English and in Indonesian and I now realize that God was talking to Abram and telling him what would happen if he followed the Lord.

Genesis 12:1 – 3
Leave your country, your family, and your relatives and go to the land I will show you. 2 I will bless you and make your descendents into a great nation. You will become famous and be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless anyone who blesses you, but I will put a curse on anyone who puts a curse on you. Everyone on earth will be blessed because of you.

I have heard people argue that to preach the word of God you need to study theology so that you understand the context of the message. I agree completely that we as Christians need to study the bible and theology. But the same people that tell me about understanding the context of the bible do not speak fluent Hebrew. Now, from reading the bible in Indonesian and English, or even different English versions such as NIV, CEV or KJV it is obvious that huge amounts of context, connotation and meaning are added and lost through the language used. It is my belief that the Word of God is alive, through the Holy Spirit.

My point is, it is an admirable thing to study theology and memorize the bible but the Holy Spirit determines what you understand. The most knowledgeable theologian in the world can preach the most amazing sermon and the person in seat A will get revelation and insight into God while the person in seat B will go to sleep only to leave the church service and receive their revelation in the church canteen while chatting to a friend from their office.

Build your relationship with God. Read and study the Bible. Learn all you can about theology. Go to mission school, do whatever you can to arm yourself with weapons to win souls for Jesus. It is good to build your knowledge and faith. But NOW is the time to start doing good deeds. As the sons and daughters of Christ we were each ‘given talents and gifts to be used in the service of others ’, we were called to ‘make our light shine so that others would see the good that we do and praise our Father in Heaven’ ( Mathew 5:16 ) And one of my favorite verses :

James 2:14 – 26
14My friends, what good is it to say you have faith, when you don’t do anything to show that you really do have faith? Can that kind of faith save you? 15If you know someone who doesn’t have any clothes or food, 16you shouldn’t just say, “I hope all goes well for you. I hope you will be warm and have plenty to eat.” What good is it to say this, unless you do something to help? 17Faith that doesn’t lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!

18Suppose someone disagrees and says, “It is possible to have faith without doing kind deeds.”

I would answer, “Prove that you have faith without doing kind deeds, and I will prove that I have faith by doing them.” 19You surely believe there is only one God. That’s fine. Even demons believe this, and it makes them shake with fear.

20Does some stupid person want proof that faith without deeds is useless? 21Well, our ancestor Abraham pleased God by putting his son Isaac on the altar to sacrifice him. 22Now you see how Abraham’s faith and deeds worked together. He proved that his faith was real by what he did. 23This is what the Scriptures mean by saying, “Abraham had faith in God, and God was pleased with him.” That’s how Abraham became God’s friend.

24You can now see that we please God by what we do and not only by what we believe. 25For example, Rahab had been a prostitute. But she pleased God when she welcomed the spies and sent them home by another way.

26Anyone who doesn’t breathe is dead, and faith that doesn’t do anything is just as dead! Faith that doesn’t lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead

Or to use a quote from Thomas Jefferson,

“ For it is our lives, and not from our words, that our religion must be judged. ”

God does not have a showroom on earth. He doesn’t hold exhibitions and put on demonstrations for crowds. Our lives need to advertise His love.

If I may, I will share what I get from Genesis 12:1 – 3

Go back to my sticker version, “Aku akan memberkati engkau dan kamu akan menjadi berkat” or “I will bless you and you will be a blessing” I believe that most people like to do good deeds. They find happiness in doing something good for someone else and being appreciated for it. But I believe that if we follow the Lord and we commit to Him, His very nature will change us and the closer we come to Him, the more our lives will be used to bless others.

Notice it doesn’t say “If I bless you, you should bless others “When God works in your life, He transforms you. His blessings come in the forms of revelation, wisdom, health, spiritual gifts, talents, destiny and love. When God blesses you with these things as He WILL if you ‘seek first the kingdom of God’ then you WILL be a blessing to others. It’s not a thing you have to choose.

All you do is love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all you strength, with all you mind and with all your soul and commit to living a righteous life. He will transform you into a loving and faithful husband, He will give you wisdom in your relationships with your children and friends, He will heal you and give you strength when times are tough, you will discover or enhance talents you have and be given opportunities to use them in ways that are pleasing to Him.

The promises of the Kingdom of Heaven are truly amazing. When you repent and give your life to Jesus, you are given the Holy Spirit and the seed of God comes to live in you. But just because you have the seed of greatness in you, it does not mean you will produce great fruit. There is a process we must all undertake. It’s a process of learning, of building, of transforming. We will never reach perfection in this lifetime but as Mother Teresa said “God does not require us to succeed, He only requires that we try”

You always pass failure on the way to success. It is in our nature to be sinful but don’t let your failures take you further away from God. That is what the devil wants. The devil wants us to feel ashamed and inadequate to approach God so that he can influence us. Take you failures and sins to God repent with all your heart and ask Him for His forgiveness so that you can continue on your journey.

‘I cannot do all great things but I can do all things with great love’

An Earnest Question

March 24, 2008

I have question and I would greatly appreciate some feedback. Why is it that when I do a post about sex I get 4-5 times more hits at my blog than when I do posts on other topics ?

Is it :

1) People are searching for porn and so the key words get more hits
2) People honestly seek information and help about sex related issues
3) Other

If it is merely because people are searching for porn, maybe I’ll just include the raunchy words in my tags when I write on other topics LOL. If people really want information, ideas, counseling or are just interested in the topic of sex, I will create a page for it.

Again I would greatly appreciate some feedback. Thanks and God Bless You, Gef

Meditation on Mathew 4

March 23, 2008

God gave me a verse this morning, Mathew 4:14. I read it and read before and after it as is my custom when I get a verse to read.

Mathew 4 :1-11

1THEN JESUS was led (guided) by the [Holy] Spirit into the wilderness (desert) to be tempted (tested and tried) by the devil.

2And He went without food for forty days and forty nights, and later He was hungry.(A)

3And the tempter came and said to Him, If You are God’s Son, command these stones to be made [[a]loaves of] bread.

4But He replied, It has been written, Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.(B)

5Then the devil took Him into the holy city and placed Him on [b]a turret (pinnacle, [c]gable) of the temple [d]sanctuary.(C) 6And he said to Him, If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, He will give His angels charge over you, and they will bear you up on their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.(D)

7Jesus said to him, [e]On the other hand, it is written also, You shall not tempt, [f]test thoroughly, or [g]try exceedingly the Lord your God.(E)

8Again, the devil took Him up on a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory (the splendor, magnificence, preeminence, and excellence) of them. 9And he said to Him, These things, all taken together, I will give You, if You will prostrate Yourself before me and do homage and worship me.

10Then Jesus said to him, Begone, Satan! For it has been written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.(F)

11Then the devil departed from Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

What I get from this section is that we are to always stay ‘insinc’ with God. Always be inline with His will for our lives. When we are tempted to do wrong  BUT we refuse to do so and exercise discipline and self control, we will be rewarded.

Mathew4:12-25

12Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested and put in prison, He withdrew into Galilee.13And leaving Nazareth, He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the country of Zebulun and Naphtali– 14That what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be brought to pass:15The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, in the [h]way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles [of the [i]peoples who are not of Israel]–
16The people who sat [a](dwelt enveloped) in darkness have seen a great Light, and for those who sat in the land and shadow of death Light has dawned.

17From that time Jesus began to preach, [b]crying out, Repent ([c]change your mind for the better, heartily amend your ways, with abhorrence of your past sins), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

18As He was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He noticed two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, throwing a dragnet into the sea, for they were fishermen.

19And He said to them, Come [d]after Me [as disciples--letting Me be your Guide], follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men!

20At once they left their nets and [e]became His disciples [sided with His party and followed Him].

21And going on further from there He noticed two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets and putting them right; and He called them.

22At once they left the boat and their father and [f]joined Jesus as disciples [sided with His party and followed Him].

23And He went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the good news (Gospel) of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every weakness and infirmity among the people.

24So the report of Him spread throughout all Syria, and they brought Him all who were sick, those afflicted with various diseases and torments, those under the power of demons, and epileptics, and paralyzed people, and He healed them.

25And great crowds joined and accompanied Him about, coming from Galilee and Decapolis [the district of the ten cities east of the Sea of Galilee] and Jerusalem and Judea and from the other [the east] side of the Jordan.

The significance of these verses for me is :

1) Jesus was the fulfillment of the prophecy which Isaiah had foretold. ( verse 14 )
2) When you earnestly repent, you are saved by grace and are no longer blind to the truth ( verse 17 )

3) When we let go of our own logic and live by faith, the unseen becomes seen.see (18 -31) and remember ‘do not lean unto your own understanding but every word that comes from the mouth of God’. ….
1Corintians 1:18For the story and message of the cross is sheer absurdity and folly to those who are perishing and on their way to perdition, but to us who are being saved it is the
[manifestation of] the power of God.
4) In verses 20 and 22, Peter and Andrew, James and John, all left what they were doing and followed Jesus, immediately and without question.

This illustrates a problem a lot of Christians have, they try to save everyone and they try to do it with words and logic and sound arguments. Jesus set the example for us, he didn’t use the powers bestowed on Him by His father to save all and sundry, He knew there were things that MUST take place and that only God was privy to what needed to be done and when.

Hence, when he asked Peter, Andrew, James and John to follow Him, they did, it was predestined and a spiritual transaction. When we try to work for God, it must be Him working in us (us insinc with Him) not us trying to do it with our own logic. Remember, lean not unto your own understanding but every word that comes from the mouth of God. Amen

No Fantasy In Sex !

March 21, 2008

There is no room for fantasy in your sexual relationship with your life partner. When you are having sex with your partner, you MUST be present, in the room, with them, focusing on what IS happening. Pornography and masturbation lead us into a fantasy world of sex and lust. For a lot of people it is the norm that is why the divorce rate is over 50% in a lot of countries.

The problem with fantasy is that it can never be satisfied. It grows and changes almost uncontrollably. It becomes a secret thought life that we have and we feel we have to hide it from those we care about. There is no room for it in a healthy marriage .A marriage is a sacred union between people and in the presence of God. The point at which you are married in God’s eyes is hard to know but when you have sexual intercourse with another person, there is an exchange on a spiritual level.

I personally was not a virgin when I got married and it is something I wish I could rectify BUT there is no taking your virginity back. One thing I have done, which I am proud of and has saved my marriage, is to reject any form of fantasy sex life. What my wife and I have is sacred and solely between us. You may think it is impossible to remain faithful in thought and action to your wife BUT I say it is completely necessary.

I made a choice one day and I have stuck to that choice. If I slip up, the first thing I do is tell my wife exactly what I have done. When you confess your sins, they have no power over you any more BUT when you hide them, they eat you from the inside out. Remember, the wages of sin is death.

Some practical things I have tried to beat the temptation of pornography and lust are:

1) Turn of the TV or change the channel when something even mildly pornographic comes on
2) I had a picture above my computer monitor of my daughter taken when she was still in the womb to remind me of where my loyalties lie.
3) Whenever I see an attractive woman or something tempting I used to say “ The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want “ recently I have changed to “ God is God “ and I will sometimes continue with “ God is God, my wife is a gift from God and I will not disgrace God.”
4) I have a good friend who I confess to and ask for prayer from when I am feeling tempted.

Most people don’t realize the dangers of a fantasy sex life and I certainly didn’t realize the benefits of living a pure, lust free life until I had tried it. There is nothing as satisfying as saying ‘I love you’ to someone and knowing that there is nothing ‘hiding in the closet’ or bouncing around in your head that you don’t want them to see.

Make the decision to break the chains that are put on you from masturbation and pornography. Don’t preempt failure by assuming you can’t do it. If you fall, pick yourself up and dust yourself off and give it another go. Things can only get better as you get better at resisting. There are some great books out there to help you like ‘Every Young Man’s Battle: Strategies for Victory in the Real World of Sexual Temptation’( and the whole series of Being God’s Man )

I guarantee you will be introduced into a whole new level of relationship if you succeed and it might just give you that edge to ensure that the devil doesn’t destroy your marriage and family.

God Bless You

Looking forward to hearing lots of support and testimonies for this one . Amen

God is God

March 20, 2008

God is God, He deals with every single person on the planet. He knows what is best for us all and what must happen to accomplish His plans. All people experience God even if they don’t acknowledge His existence. God is loving and patient and forgives people for their ignorance BUT he is also a jealous God and wants all people to love and honor Him.

For every human being, there will come a time when they will stand in the presence of Almighty God and He will judge them. People who do Yoga, Tai Chi, believe in Buddhism, Islam, anyone who searches for God, may experience Him BUT at that time when we are in His presence, our only response can be ‘Almighty God, I am not worthy of your love, I am not strong enough to stand in Your Mighty presence, I am sinful Lord God, please have mercy on me’

At that point, I KNOW that God will say to me “ Gef, I have known you every day of your life. I have seen every thought you have had and I KNOW that you believe. I know that you have accepted the gift of grace that comes in the form of Jesus Christ, my son. Welcome my beloved child. “

No one can stand in the presence of God without Jesus. You cannot do enough good deeds or have a peaceful enough heart. Everyone needs Jesus. He is the way the truth and the life. The sooner you accept Him, the sooner you can live a productive life bringing the lost back to His loving care. It is never too late !!

God loves you and has a plan for your life. All you need to do is believe. There is nothing you can do to make him love you less, just believe and turn back to God. He has been waiting for you your whole life. That hole in your heart that you have tried to fill but have never satiated is the place where God’s love should flow. The key is accepting Jesus, He wants to give you the ‘water of life, the Holy Spirit’.

If this is the time for you to accept Jesus, pray this prayer :

Lord Jesus I acknowledge you as my Lord and savior. I thank you for dying on the cross for my sins and I want to live a life of purpose. Please Lord, help and guide me so I may bring glory and honor to Your name in all I do. Amen.

Take your time. This is not magic. Your life will not be free of problems. You won’t be able to shoot lightening out of your palms. You have now been born again, congratulations. But you are a spiritual baby. You must grow. Seek Him and you will find. Read the bible from beginning to end and you will be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Buy some praise and worship music and practice opening yourself to God by praising Him with song (no matter how uncomfortable that may be for you ) search for a community of believers to fellowship with.

God Bless You

Prioritising Your Life – Part Two

March 17, 2008

Read part one below before part two.

Each box is divided into 4 things :

1) TIME
2) CONSCIOUSNESS
3) PRAYER
4) DEDICATION

If one of those things is out of balance, something is not right.

1. Time, I look at a day like this

8 hours WORK
8 hours LEISURE TIME
8 hours SLEEP

You only ever have 24hrs in any day. The key to success is to make God the focus of WORK , LEISURE TIME AND SLEEP. You do this by surrendering your life to Him and constantly seeking His guidance.

Some people may put things like Tv or shopping in the leisure time section. Nothing is wrong with that. But 8 hours a day of Tv is not good.

Using your leisure time for going to church , serving others , studying , building relationships with your family and friends. Those sorts of things might be more productive. To glorify God your work and your leisure time should be your ministry. Your sleep time is when you get to relax and rest.

Some people may spend 10 + hours a day at work and they are too tired to play with their children , they become lazy to exercise and so their health suffers. Stress kills people. Others may work 12 hours, come home and devote their afternoon to their family, sleep a deep, satisfying sleep, awake early for prayer and bible meditation, go for a jog and be ready for another day at work. As Einstein pointed out, time really is relative.

2. Consciousness – it is vital that you give 100% of your consciousness to each thing in your life.

Your family , work , church , study and hobbies need and deserve 100% of your consciousness.

For example, if you cannot leave your work consciousness at work it will affect everything else. You will be thinking about your problems at work in church and will not experience fellowship. You won’t pay attention to your children when they talk to you and they will suffer.

If you cannot leave your family consciousness at home you won’t be able to concentrate on your job. You will be thinking about your family or emotional because you are having problems with your wife and won’t be able to do your job properly.

3. Prayer – If you are not praying for God to guide each part of your life, family , work , church ,service , study and hobbies then you are leaving God out. Before a game of golf do you pray for God to protect you and to use you to witness to the caddy or be a blessing to the people you are playing with. Do you pray for God to give you strength , guidance and anointing for your job ? Do you pray for forgiveness for your mistakes and selfishness ? Do you pray for God to help you to form close, loving relationships with your husband or wife and children ? Do you pray for wisdom from above about how to handle the latest problem at work ?

4. Dedication – Do you dedicate yourself to everything you do ? Do you always do your best ? Do you try to improve ? Are you dedicated to getting the job done ?

I try to devote myself to everything I do. I watch Tv with passion , I play with my daughter and give her my full understanding , guidance and love. I do everything I can to influence those I come in contact with so they may know God. Sometimes you can see someone struggling with a basic life/spiritual problem and God lets you know that there is nothing for you to do but give them a smile. Other times people you barely know or like will share their heart with you and you will have the opportunity to bring salvation, joy and peace into their life. Its all about God !

CONCLUSION

Balance is important in life. There is a saying “ If you don’t plan , you plan to fail “ You need to be aware of how you spend every hour of your life. Life is short and precious. Don’t let your life get out of balance. Pray and invite God into every part of your life. Devote yourself to the things in your life that matter. If something is wrong in your family relationships or your work or your church life.. Check it. Are you giving it the right amount of TIME , CONSCIOUSNESS , PRAYER and DEDICATION

Surrender always unto God and He will direct Your path

“Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than the words. It is making the time when there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year. Commitment is the stuff character is made of; the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism.”

Abraham Lincoln

Prioritising Your Life – Part One

March 17, 2008

I would like to share some things about how I view my life. My life is like a blank piece of paper, I have free will and can choose to fill it how I want. Some people might prioritize their life like this.

30% = work
20% = family
10% = hobbies
15% = church
15% = God
10% = study

Other people will prioritize their life differently. This is the way I try to prioritize my life.

Imagine the list above as a piece of paper divided into sections ( even draw it if you can ). Each section given the appropriate amount of space for its priority rating. Some people will prioritize their life differently but the idea is essentially the same. You have 100 % of yourself and you divide yourself and your time between the activities of your life according to how important they are.

Now imagine my piece of blank paper. Divide it into even boxes. As many as you want / need / can. Each box is filled with the activities of your life ; work, church, family time, shopping, hobbies, study, sleeping etc. Everything EXCEPT GOD. The reason is that GOD IS THE PIECE OF PAPER. He is in every aspect of your life.

Each box in the diagram is not a percentage of me. I don’t put 40% into family , 40% into work, 10% into church , 5 % into hobbies , 2.5% into service and 2.5% into study.

Into each box I put 100% or as I aim for 110%.

My Love, Hate Relationship With Money – Part Two

March 16, 2008

I have done several significant things with money in my life.

1) Blown every cent I can get on pointless, self destructive things. Accumulated huge debt and gambled away large sums of money. For a long time I was almost a carbon copy of my father but then I met my wife and began to change. I realize that there are still attitudes about money that I have that are left over from the old me. I am afraid of being financially successful.

2) Before I got married, I taught private lessons after work ( 3-4 times a week) The money was very good and I used it to save up for my wedding. After we got married, the money was still good (LOL) so I kept doing it. When my wife got pregnant, the money from private lessons was essential. After my daughter was born, it seemed more essential. One day I left for work before my daughter woke up. When I got home in the afternoon, she was sleeping. I showered and changed and went to teach privates. By the time I got home, she was asleep for the night. I called my private students and told them I would be finishing at the end of the month. I PUT MY FAMILY TIME BEFORE FINANCIAL SECURITY AND ALWAYS WILL.

3) My wife and I went through the mental wringer trying to decide what to do as our 2 year rental contract was expiring. We looked at moving closer to the school I work at ( http://www.citahati.org/ ) and struggled when we found out that there was no way we could get a bank loan as I was the sole wage earner and a foreign citizen, therefore there was no way for us to buy a house. We were looking at paying 2 years rent in advance (the common custom here) and throwing all that money away on rent. BUT GOD IS A GOOD GOD, He answered our prayers and we were able to begin paying off a house. Completely above our understanding but God did it. It meant that we were paying 40% of our income on house payments. The next thing we did was buy a car on hire purchase. There goes another 25%. So before we had paid for milk, nappies, immunization, water, electricity etc. 65% of our income was gone on house and car payments. BUT WE TRUSTED GOD. Maybe the car was our own stupidity and God didn’t intend us to have it BUT HE MADE THAT OK TOO. We had never thought of how long we would be paying most of our income into the house and car. Things were very, very tight and we often had to juggle bills over several months. BUT I still didn’t sell my family time by going back to teaching privates. When my new contract came around, my wife and I were saying how great it would be if my salary went up 5%. How it would take the pressure off. I called my wife straight after I received my new contract with a raise of 30% !!

4) The last significant thing I have done with money was in the past few weeks. I am determined to be disciplined and not feel regret because we often pay only a portion of our tithe because we fear there will not be enough money left. I have organized for a savings account for my daughters. We are paying extra off our loan and we will put our tithe at the top of our budgeting column. God comes first !! We may struggle financially, we may not be blessed with lots of money to travel and buy a new hot water heater BUT we will do what we know is right with our money. Be disciplined and ask God what to do with it.

Look for future testimonies about how God looks after my family because we put Him first. Amen

God Bless You
