I was invited to preach at my church’s radio station a few weeks ago. Usually the representative will give a topic or theme to discuss but this time I was told I could preach about whatever I wanted. I was confused, I have a few ‘go to’ sermons which I have done a few times and are fairly guaranteed to go over well. Being my first invitation to preach at my own church radio station I was keen to do well so I asked my wife what I should preach about. Without hesitation she replied ‘arrogance’.
I was a bit bewildered. Arrogance sounded like a really hard topic to knock people’s socks off with. Then I started to wonder, why did my wife choose arrogance? Does she think I’m arrogant? But because I trust God had a plan I set out to prepare a sermon on arrogance. And here is what I got…
What is arrogance ? arrogant = having or showing an exaggerated opinion of one’s own importance, merit, ability, etc; conceited; overbearingly proud: an arrogant teacher ; an arrogant assumption sombong = berlebihan
1) Where did arrogance come from ?
It could be argued that arrogance was the first sin.Lucifer was an angel. He became jealous of Adam and claimed to be more important than Adam. His arrogance and pride led him to disobey God. That disobedience got him kicked out of heaven
2) Why does God hate arrogance ?
Arrogance is a sign of disobedience….
1 Corinthians 4:7 For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
Even Jesus had to be obedient to the Father
JOHN 5:30 “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
3) Why you can’t be arrogant
Arrange these sins = stealing, murder, rape, gossip, pride
The reality is that there is no order for these sins. There are no small sins and no big sins, sin is sin !
Romans 3:23 We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Ephesians 2:8-9 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God 9not by works, so that no one can boast..
4) What forms does arrogance take ?
A) We are arrogant with God
He speaks and we don’t listen OR we fail to seek His guidance.
“I took my own path and I didn’t seek your advice Lord, and now I am lost!”
B) We are arrogant with others
Matt 7:3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
C) Arrogance as a parent
The importance of parents repenting in front of their kids. Make sure your kids hear you say “I am a sinner and I need God too”. If you don’t you discourage your kids because they see that you are aware of their sin but ignorant of your own. You look like a hypocrite
D) Christians seen as arrogant to others KNOWING the truth can make Christians seem arrogant to non believers
Perceived arrogance – saying the truth is not arrogance. Paul in Corinthians 2:10-10 reprimands the church at Corinth and the people revolt by asking :who is this that he feels he can criticize us “? But Paul was reprimanding because he was RIGHT
That is hard for the world to accept. In some parts of the world homosexuals can marry. Therefore in the eyes of the government it is legal and therefore right. As a Christian you cannot say homosexuality is wrong. The world’s interpretation of right is not God’s standard.
5) Can you be sure God wants you to be humble ? WDJD
Philippians 2:5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus . . . Philippians 2: 8…….. he humbled himself . . .
John 13:1-17 Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet 1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.[a] 2The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8″No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” 9″Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” 10Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. 12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13″You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
Note : we think the power in the world will make us happy but it has been proved over and over again that it doesn’t !! We were created in the image of God and we will ONLY be happy when we are ministering to others.
Proverbs 16:5 The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished
Matthew 23:11-12 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Final Note: My sermon went over very well. I could barely sleep for days beforehand through worry and often considered dumping the topic for one I was more confident with but I wasn’t arrogant enough to believe that it was I that would make it work. I walked in faith and God did the rest.
