2 Peter 1:3-11
3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
What an interesting piece of scripture. You may have been saved. You may have been called. BUT you need to confirm your calling. He has given you everything you need to do so, all we need to do is ‘make every effort’ to become a better person, more faithful, good, knowledgeable, self controlled, perseverant, godly, affectionate and loving.
If we look at each one of these things, we can name practical ways in which we can increase these qualities in our lives.
More faithful – take a responsibility at church and see it through.
More knowledgeable – read His word and meditate on it.
More self controlled – practice fasting
More perseverant – keep this verse in mind when things get tuff and you want to give up.
More godly – add to your devotion and prayer time.
More affectionate and loving – take more time and opportunities to spoil and love those around you. Reach out to strangers
with hospitality, concern and love.
If we take control of the person we are, set goals to grow and spend time and effort getting there, His word tells us we are in line for very great and precious promise. If the stick works better than the carrot for you, note that whoever fails to possess these qualities in increasing measure is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
This verse is not ambiguous or cryptic. He has given us all we need to become the people He wants us to be, it is up to us to strive to get there.
God Bless You
