When we take communion, we are NOT cleansed of our sins.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
So why do we take communion?
1) To ‘proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes’
2) To remind ourselves of the fact that WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN FORGIVEN.
God does not condemn us for our sins.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
We do not get praised when we do well and cursed when we do bad.
When we sin, we distance ourselves from God. Just as with the first sin, God DOES NOT distance himself from us.
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
The devil’s trick is to get us to focus on our righteousness. “Look what you’ve done, and you are supposed to be made in the image of God!” But the bible says our righteousness is like filthy rags.(Isaiah 64)
If you are saved, God has forgiven all your sins, past, present and future.
So why do right?
Because when you are sinning, you focus on your sinful nature. It’s natural. You think and pray about being freed from the guilt and thoughts and habits that result from your sins. If you avoid those sins and resist the devil, you are free to operate on a higher level. You no longer focus on your sinful nature, or even yourself! You focus on God and His plans in the lives of others.
This is the ‘power’ that lies in the Holy Communion. The power to remind us that it is not about us. It is ALL about Him! He knows without a shadow of a doubt how weak we are. He sees everyday of our life even before one day was over. And yet, He chooses us. He knows you will fall. He knows you will stumble. He knows you are not good enough. That’s why he sent Jesus. So He could redeem you, to use you. He didn’t redeem you so you could pray and think and work on being redeemed. It’s DONE!!
2 Corinthians 3: 4-6
4 Such confidence we have through Christ before God. 5 Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Get out there and live it.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
